Chapter One
- Introduced to Nick Carraway as the narrator
- He passes along his fathers advice
- We learn he is a non-judgemental, which is why people tell him their life stories
- He comes from a wealthy family and went to Yale
- Introduces us to East Egg (old money) and West Egg (new money)
- Nick lives in West Egg, next door to a mysterious, wealthy Mr Gatsby
- Nick is a stockbroker
- Nick heads over to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan, an old college buddy
- Nick makes it clear that the Buchanans are filthy rich
- Tom is a large and "aggressive" former footballer, he is not sensitive
- We meet Daisy and her friend Jordan Baker
- Daisy and Tom have a child, who spends majority of her time sleeping in the other room
- During a conversation Nick mentions Gatsby and Daisy gets particularly interested
- In general during Chapter 1 Daisy seems happy and excited about life, and she has a bruise that Tom accidently gave her
- Then Tom gets a phone call in the middle of their dinner and Daisy seems to lose it and starts yelling at him, then Jordan reveals to Nick that Tom is having an affair
- Daisy then talks about how during the birth of her little girl Tom was not even their and how she wishes her daughter would grow up to be a "beautiful little fool", so to dumb to know any better
- We find out Jordan is a golfer and issues in many magazines and articles
- Daisy then jokes about Nick and Jordan being together
- Nick returns home back to West Egg where he sees Gatsby looking out to the lone green light
Chapter Two
- Nick describes the land between the Eggs and New York as the "Valley of Ashes", which sounds very unpleasant
- Above this "Waste Land" the eyes of Dr T.J. Eckleburg are always watching through this huge billboard that features his eyes
- Tom and Nick are on their way to New York but Tom insists on stopping here to show Nick his mistress
- The mistress is the wife of an automechanic named George B.Wilson
- Tom is rude to Wilson, who seems to be working on his car for him and then sends Myrtle (mistress) to come with him to the city
